Whether you decide to take the car to your repair
shop or dealer to get the job done, or you set out to do it in your own workshop,
the first step is to buy the correct part. Obvious, you say? You
would be surprised how many of our customers mistakenly tell us that they are
lookng to buy the whole control arm, complete with the bushings!
When we ask them why they want to spend all that unnecessary extra cash, the
invariable answer is that they were told that it was not possible to replace
just the bushings!
This is just not true. Thousands of happy customers
have used our top quality ADUS aftermarket bushings to do the job, and they
have never been happier. Our polyurethane bushings are guaranteed and will give
your car the precision ride that only quality polyurethane bushings can give.
Now do not get us wrong. There are times when,
say, a lower control arm has been damaged in an accident and will need to be
replaced, but 99 times out of 100, the arm is in perfect condition, and it is
just the worn bushings that need replacing.
As we have explained many times, the original
OEM bushings are made out of rubber. Rubber
hardens, cracks and crumbles over time under the corrosive
effects of a whole range of chemicals that drip down or splash up onto your
suspension as you drive your car along. So if you replace the worn rubber bushings
with new OEM rubber bushings (if you can get them!), the whole process is just going
to repeat itself.
So whether it is a lower control arm bushing,
in the upper control arms or the rear control arms, do not get talked into replacing
it with rubber, go for the modern hi-tech alternative that is guaranteed to
last the life-time of the car. Go for a good guaranteed
aftermarket polyurethane bushing.
There are some great YouTube videos and forum
posts out there which people have kindly put up, showing how they went about
doing it in their own home workshop. Of course if you leave it to your experienced
repair shop mechanic, he will have done the job before, but there are still
times that he may need to check certain details if the bushing is new to him.
Search on "youtube removing rubber bushings" and you will find plenty
of information!
First, you need to get the old bushing out, together
with the metal sleeve that encased it. This is a two-part process. Once you
have the arm off, push the old bushing out. This may take a little persuasion!
A number of different techniques have been successfully used here. Many use
a two or three jaw puller to get them out, but you can find YouTube videos that show
some easy techniques using home-made pullers. Contact us for the link if you
cannot find it. Second step is to remove the metal sleeve. Here again there
are some great YouTube videos. New polyurethane bushings do not require a surrounding metal sleeve.
Once the arm is cleaned out and ready, a little
silicone past will usually help easy that new polyurethane bushing in, and then
it is a question of reassembling the arm, and you are done. There are a great
number of people who have shared their experiences on the various forums. You
just need to search!
